The Department of Sociology was established in 1992 and is one of the core disciplines of the Faculty of Croatian Studies. The concept of sociology studies focuses on the application of sociological theories and social science methodology for understanding social processes and phenomena in the specific context of Croatian society and comparatively in a European and global perspective. The study of sociology aims to train highly qualified sociological research personnel with professional research and analytical skills necessary for productive work in the public and private sectors. The sociology program at the bachelor's and master's levels is organized according to current international scientific standards.
Assistant Professor Erik Brezovec from the Department of Sociology has published a new co-authored scientific paper, in which he is the lead author, titled “Reconstructing GenAI in Education: A Social Systems Theory Approach”, published earlier this month in the journal British Journal of Sociology of Education.
Alongside Dr. Brezovec, the co-authors of the paper are Assistant Professor Josip Ježovita, Associate Professor Steven Watson, and Associate Professor Ivan Balabanić. The paper builds on Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory and analyses education as an autopoietic system that can understand and utilise generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) exclusively through its own communication processes. The central argument is that GenAI does not act upon education as a predefined external factor, but acquires meaning only through educational practices, expectations, and routines.
This theoretical approach enables a deeper understanding of how external influences—such as technological innovations or economic interests—are integrated into the educational system, but solely through its own internal mechanisms.
