Assistant Professor Ivan Perkov, PhD, from the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, appeared in a segment of the RTL Direkt program dedicated to the growing problem of violence and discrimination against foreign workers in Croatia. The discussion was prompted by a recent attack on a Filipino worker in Zagreb, which triggered strong public reactions and concern among migrant workers.

During the interview, Perkov pointed out that foreign workers are often targeted by individuals who choose those they perceive as vulnerable and unprotected.

“Attackers targeting foreign workers are, as a rule, cowards. They choose people they believe cannot defend themselves,” Perkov emphasized.

Speaking about the experiences of foreign workers in Croatia, Perkov stressed that many face insults, humiliation, and various forms of violence in their everyday lives. In the report, some workers described being verbally abused by passers-by, and sometimes even by younger individuals.

Perkov also warned about the influence of social media on young people, noting that they are particularly susceptible to manipulation and content that can lead to the normalization of extreme views and violent behavior.

“Young people often get the impression through social media that extreme views and violence are normal and acceptable, especially when such content goes without clear social condemnation. They easily fall into echo chambers,” Perkov warned.

He added that this is precisely why it is important to discuss such cases in schools and within the education system, so that young people can develop an awareness that violence against foreign workers, or against any person, is neither normal nor socially acceptable.

Perkov concluded that foreign workers today represent an important part of Croatia’s labor market and everyday life, particularly in sectors such as transport, delivery services, construction, and service industries, and that it is necessary to foster a culture of tolerance, solidarity, and social responsibility.
