The Department of Sociology was established in 1992 and is one of the core disciplines of the Faculty of Croatian Studies. The concept of sociology studies focuses on the application of sociological theories and social science methodology for understanding social processes and phenomena in the specific context of Croatian society and comparatively in a European and global perspective. The study of sociology aims to train highly qualified sociological research personnel with professional research and analytical skills necessary for productive work in the public and private sectors. The sociology program at the bachelor's and master's levels is organized according to current international scientific standards.
Assistant Professor Ivan Perkov, PhD, of the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, has been awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth to participate in a professional development programme on Holocaust education, organised in cooperation with Yad Vashem – the World Holocaust Remembrance Center.
The programme will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 24 to 28 August. Following a joint decision by the Ministry and Yad Vashem, Assistant Professor Perkov was selected as one of the scholarship recipients for this international professional training programme.
Participation in the programme will further strengthen the teaching and research activities of the Department of Sociology in the fields of Holocaust education, memory culture, antisemitism, genocide studies, human rights, and the sociological understanding of social violence.
The scholarship represents a continuation of the Department of Sociology's engagement with these topics, particularly through the collaboration between Assistant Professor Ivan Perkov and Professor Renato Matić, PhD. In May, they took part in an important educational programme in Berlin dedicated to Holocaust education, memory culture, and confronting historical revisionism. Prior to that, they also received significant support from Northwestern University in the United States for the development of teaching and research activities related to Holocaust education.
